"Mikhail Kalashnikov designed an assault rifle to deal with the adverse conditions of the Soviet frontline. The ""Avtomat Kalashnikov 1947"" later to be known as the AK47, became a standard issue rifle in the Soviet Army. Its popularity grew as the gun would operate under the most extreme situations, such as being buried in sand, or submersion in water. Kalashnikov's invention has become one of the greatest innovations in arms and one of the most recognized rifles in the world.
